Tour around Penang!

Got up around 9:30am for our ‘tour’ around Penang! We drove to Pulau Tikus and Uncle Alex and the gang had already driven up from Sungai Ara. Mum and dad had errands to do so they didn’t join us. Our first stop was Kek Lok Si temple. In the sweltering heat we climbed up the steps, past the rows of stores selling touristy junk, to the pond that contained the turtles. Man the water was filthy! Poor turtles!!! We continued up to the temple itself and enjoyed some views of Penang.

After returning to the bottom again, we went round the corner to Bukit Bendara (Penang Hill) and caught the 12pm train just in time! It was packed, hot and uncomfortable but we beared with it. The journey took about 20mins up the mountain. At the top we were greeted by sweeping views of the island, Penang Bridge, and the mainland. We also enjoyed the cooler air at 600 over metres above sea level.

Feeling peckish, we had a quick snack of ABC Ice Kacang! Yummy! Di also treated herself to a sugarhit in the form of a snickers icecream. Recharged, we decided to do the rainforest canopy walk. We trekked 1600m to get there, passing by some English style houses on the way. Man it was the most exercise we had done since arriving in Malaysia! We eventually reached the start of the walk - Uncle Alex, Denise, Rachel, Di and myself chose to do it. The walk was awesome! We walked along a narrow suspended boardwalk of sorts high above the ground. It was 220m in all and it was definitely worth the walk!

After trekking the 1600m back, we checked out the view from that hotel we always visit, then took the 2:30pm train back down. Feeling hungry again, we headed straight for the nearby hawker area and had Claypot Chicken rice and Wantan mee for lunch! Then it was on with the tour!

We visited the Botanical Gardens next, followed by 2 buddhist temples, one Thai and the other Burmese. Then we returned to Aunty Chooi Gnoh’s place to rest! We played the piano and had some shut eye. My parents returned from their shopping around 6:30pm and we said farewell to them as they were returning to Ipoh this evening. They’ll be heading to Taiwan tomorrow at 2:30pm from KL.

After they left, we went out for dinner at a banana leaf place that served up Indian curries and chutneys on banana leaves with papadums and rice. It was quite good! Paul and I enjoyed a refreshing Tiger beer. After dinner we got dropped back to the hotel by Uncle Karsar after an encouraging chat in the car!
